At Vindolanda, we provide immersive excavation opportunities for individuals of all experience levels.

Types of Excavation tickets

There are many excavation opportunities at Vindolanda, you can choose from various ticket types:

Two weeks excavation at Vindolanda Roman Fort and an Excavation T-Shirt

Excavate & Stay Single: £1350

Two weeks excavation at Vindolanda Roman Fort and an Excavation T-Shirt, plus self-catered en-suite accommodation at the Hedley Centre on site at Vindolanda for one person. You will have access to the kitchen area for your meals or you can visit a local eatery.

Excavate & Stay Double/Twin: £1950

Two weeks excavation at Vindolanda Roman Fort and an Excavation T-Shirts for two people, plus self-catered en-suite accommodation at the Hedley Centre on site at Vindolanda for two people in one room. You will have access to the kitchen area for your meals or you can visit a local eatery.

Excavate & Stay Single Suite: £1950

Two weeks excavation at Vindolanda Roman Fort and an Excavation T-Shirt, plus private self-catered accommodation with your own kitchenette and lounge area, bathroom and bedroom at the Hedley Centre on site at Vindolanda for one person.

Bursary Programme: Free

Three places for young people aged 18 - 25 who might not otherwise have the opportunity. Two weeks excavation at Vindolanda Roman Fort and an Excavation T-Shirt, plus self-catered accommodation (a welcome pack on arrival) at the Hedley Centre on site at Vindolanda for one person. Bursary applications are closed for 2026 and will re open towards the end of the 2026 excavation season for 2027 applications.

Philanthropic Excavation places: £2000

New for 2026: We’re excited to launch a special “Philanthropic Excavation Places” at Vindolanda, offering one extra spot each period. Priced at £2,000, this place gives participants the chance to join our world-famous excavation team and play an active role in uncovering Vindolanda’s hidden history.

The contribution from this place will directly fund a new Excavation Supervisor, helping us provide even better support, guidance, and training for all our volunteer diggers throughout the season.

It’s a wonderful way for passionate supporters to get hands-on with archaeology, experience the excitement of discovery, and leave a lasting legacy for future generations. Participants can choose to remain anonymous or be recognised. They will share the same excavation experience as every other digger, while also seeing the direct impact of their donation by meeting the person they’ve helped to fund.
