From 2022 – 2024, the Trust hosted a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Newcastle University. Funded via Innovate UK, the Hadrian’s Wall Partnership and Northumberland County Council, the partnership explored the scope of contemporary art programming for the Trust. Through an action learning programme, delivered by Newcastle University’s Senior Research Associate and Curator, Judith King and Knowledge Transfer Associate, Morag Iles, the Trust experimented with new curatorial approaches, exploring how artistic practice could inform the Trust’s methods of research and presentation. This included piloting an Artist-in-Residence programme, hosting artist, Sonia E Barrett.

During her residency, Sonia spent time with staff, volunteers and researchers, exploring Vindolanda and the local area. The residency resulted in a film documenting the exchange between artist and archaeological site.
