Susie MacMurray Appointed Artist-in-Residence 2026

Magna Shoes

Excavations at Magna Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall are revealing fascinating insights into the people occupied this northern outpost. The recent discovery of leather shoes includes many which are exceptionally large and have captivated the imagination of archaeologists, volunteers and the public.

Victory

A sandstone relief, believed to be a representation of the Roman goddess of Victory, has been discovered reused in a pile of rubble above infantry barracks at Vindolanda.

New archaeological dig commences

The modern excavations started at the Vindolanda Trust's Roman site of Magna on the 3rd of July, the beginning of a new and substantial five-year archaeological and environmental project for Hadrian’s Wall.

Magna Project gets green light

The Vindolanda Charitable Trust has been awarded a £1.625m grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund towards the £2.5m Roman Magna Project on Hadrian’s Wall.

Creating Connections Project

Creating Connections is a two-year project funded by ACE (Arts Council England) and combines public engagement with the local community and collection care as part of the digitisation of the Vindolanda collection of artefacts.
